Dogs are very social, which makes them prone to the same kinds of syndromes and disorders that people suffer from. Being as social as they are, dogs are very loyal to their owners and can easily develop behavior problems when their owner is not present. This can result in some very serious behavior problems, and there is even a condition called dog separation anxiety.

When your dog or puppy has driven you to the end of your tether, just to get some peace and quiet, you will try almost anything. One obvious and popular choice is to use a bark collar.
Dog bark collars are available in many types and configurations. The bark collar is based on negative reinforcement psychology, so when your dog barks, they automatically receive an unpleasant sensation. The aim is to teach your dog that each time it barks, it will have an experience it doesn't like. Sounds simple and effective don't you think? The answer is both yes and no.
To start, each time your dog barks, some bark collars deliver an electric shock. Although this isn't lethal, it's a terrible sensation. I personally would never subject my dog to this type of torture.
While a bark collar may seem like an effective short term solution, it only fixes the surface problem, and not the root cause. The actual root issue of what causes your dog to bark is being left untreated, resulting in an unhappy and mentally stressed out dog. And the cost of these collars can also be very high – a lot of them in excess of $100.
There can also be a serious medical condition which is little known that causes your dog to bark continuously, and a bark collar IS NOT the answer.
Let me ask some questions about your lovely dog:
1. Does your dog incessantly bark and whine?
2. Does your dog bite furniture, pace around the room, rip carpets, bite through dry wall, damage window coverings, damage plants or scratch at doors and windows?
3. Does your dog hurt itself due to its bad behaviour?
4. Does your dog leap up at friends and family? Resulting in dirty clothes and possible scratched skin!
5. Does your dog growl and get jealous often, or even attack people, including children who would simply like to pet your dog?
Your dog may be suffering from a serious condition called "dog separation anxiety" if you answered yes to any of the questions.
Dogs with severe separation anxiety have a serious condition. They may go to the bathroom in your own home. There are actual cases where the poor animals cause themselves harm by trying to jump through glass to find you. Yes, it's true, some dogs have unfortunately died because the separation anxiety has been left untreated.
It's sad, but the truth is, a lot of dogs suffer from this condition - and after months of obedience training, sedative drugs, and a bark collar, the dog still barks like crazy - and the owners are left stressed out having made no progress. These poor dogs/puppies become labelled as "destructive" and/or "bad" dogs and may even be euthanized.
But the good news is that dog separation anxiety is treatable. Unfortunately though, not a lot of information is available on this condition, let alone any effective treatments. Look for dog training courses that deal with the issue of dog separation anxiety BEFORE you decide to go and buy a bark collar.
